However, it is probably the oldest surviving book of art theory in the world, and cannot be ignored by aestheticians. It is not of great substance either among Plato’s works or philosophy in general: one commentator described it as a ‘slight dialogue’ about which ‘little need be said’ 1. Plato’s authorship and the relatively early date are mostly accepted, though some scholars dispute both assertions. ![]() Written in about 380 BCE, it takes the form of a short conversation between Socrates, a philosopher and Plato’s real-life mentor, and Ion, a ‘ rhapsode’ or professional reciter and critic of poetry. Ion is the only dialogue by Plato that exclusively addresses the arts, namely criticism and poetry (which in the Greek context includes drama). ![]()
